Spirit of St. Louis

There's no Lindbergh museum in St. Louis, which is surprising because I just drove past Lindbergh Avenue today and because everyone knows about the plane. What gives? Perhaps the city of St. Louis decided that a museum honoring a Nazi sympathizer who wanted to align with Hitler would be tacky. But, then again, that didn't stop Detroit from plastering the name Ford on its football field. I'm reminded of Philip Roth's The Plot Against America, an alternate history in which Lindbergh is nominated for the Republican nomination and defeats Roosevelt in the 1940 presidential election. What that has to do with St. Louis is pretty much nothing, but I'm just throwing the name of a decent book out there for anyone who likes to read about American fascists. I apologize to the Charles Lindbergh fan club and understand that my membership will likely be revoked.

The rest of St. Louis remains to be seen by me. I'm right next to the arch, but have so much work to do and it's so cold outside that I couldn't be bothered. However, the Anheuser Busch brewery is just a few exits away and I'm only driving a rental so I may get sloshed up on Budweiser Select or whatever new crappy experimental beer they're doling it and try to blow a 2.0. Just kidding, mom and dad--I drive better after 8 beers.

One of the deans at the ITT Tech I visited today suggested I go to the St. Louis Blues game since I'm just a few blocks away from the arena. Truthfully, I kinda wanted to go, but two things stopped me: 1) I don't really watch hockey because it's a sport played by Canadian communists on skates, and 2) it's no fun watching a game alone. I could just imagine all the dudes with mullets and all their girlfriends with matching mullets eating their hotdogs by sucking them through the gaps in their teeth, looking at me and wondering, "Who is this loser?"

The hockey comments aside (no bating there) - I thought St. Louis sucked when I was there. Sort of the epitome of the dead American downtown and flight to the suburbs. When I was there, there was almost no one downtown walking around - very unlike Chicago. The arch was cool though; the museum underneath it is worth checking out.

Yeah, downtown was dead. It's more like a financial district mixed with some historic sites and a ballpark. I guess I really didn't think about the fact that no one was walking around because I was too busy freezing my ass off.
